Seasoned bagpipe instructor, Kathryn Johnstone, has over 16 years of experience playing the bagpipes. She has previously served as a pipe major of a local pipe band and led the massed pipes and drums at the Birmingham Military Tattoo between playing at many private functions and making appearances at folk festivals and on television.

At KJ Folk Music, we cater to all age groups and abilities, from beginners to improvers. No prior equipment is necessary for the initial lessons as we provide everything you need.

To kickstart your bagpipe journey, you will begin by learning on a practice chanter. A practice chanter is a smaller, quieter version of the bagpipes that allows students to focus on mastering the notes and tunes before transitioning to the full set of pipes. It serves as a fundamental tool for beginners to build a strong foundation in playing the bagpipes.
